Is UV Light Cleaning a Green Solution?

Indoor air contaminants can be up to 100 times more concentrated than outdoor pollutants. These contaminants can cause conditions like asthma, allergies, and other respiratory ailments. Most of us spend the majority of our time indoors, so finding a way to keep indoor air clean is of extreme importance.

Traditionally, our homes and offices have been kept clean by using harsh chemical cleaners. Unfortunately, these same chemicals damage the environment as well as cause allergic reactions in many people. Especially in closed indoor spaces, chemicals can increase air toxicity instead of reducing it. Fortunately, there is now a green solution to cleaning your indoor air that is safe, chemical free, and does not damage the environment.

In nature, outdoor microbes are regulated by the C band of ultraviolet (UV) light that comes from the sun. The use of ultraviolet C (UV-C) light indoors has been shown to destroy germs – viruses, molds, bacteria, and fungi. UV light has been used for years in wastewater plants and other commercial settings to increase sanitation. Now, UV light manufacturers are providing this type of cleaning as an in-home solution. They have found a cost-effective way to provide UV-C for home use.

It’s easy to be excited about this new solution. By placing a UV unit in your heating and airflow unit, all of the air in your home can be purified effectively and continuously. While direct exposure to UV radiation is harmful to humans, by placing the UV light into the HVAC you minimize human exposure while still gaining the cleaning effectiveness.

UV is a great green-cleaning solution, especially compared to the indoor use of ozone to purify air. Ozone has been shown to damage lung tissue and is very dangerous in large quantities. The UV process, on the other hand, is chemical-free, does not pollute the environment, and does not damage human tissue when properly installed. The lamp bulbs last a full year, and unlike air filters, they do not create a new breeding ground for germs.

It’s wonderful to see industries taking green solutions seriously. We don’t have to be captive to harsh chemicals if we want safe and sanitary living. With UV-C, we have a great way to clean the air in our homes. As we continue increasing demand for green solutions, companies will continue to create new ways to take care of ourselves without harming the environment. And that is truly a win-win situation.
