How to Go Green at Work – Staying Eco, Sticking to a Budget at Watching the Bottom Line

Any business venture you enter into always comes down to the bottom line. Whether you’re self-employed or part of a team at the office, your company’s profits are directly impacted by your expenses. If you’re looking to keep your expenses to an absolute minimum, the best place to start is by looking at your energy bills. There are many ways to go green with your business, helping both the environment and your accountant in the process. If you are in need of financial help with your debt then consider looking into a Trust Deed.

  1. Lighting

First and foremost, your lighting accounts for a massive part of your energy bill – if you’re working from home your lighting probably accounts for around 40 per cent of your electricity bill. Old incandescent bulbs and fluorescent tube lighting are horrendously inefficient, wasting an obscene amount of energy with every second they run. Replacing these lights with modern LED lamps requires very little work, using the same fixtures you already have in place. They run up to 90 per cent cheaper than the old tech, meaning you save money and the environment at the same time.

  1. Water

Saving water is one of those oft-overlooked ways of saving both money and the environment. There are many ways you can save water at home and in the office, from simple things like turning off the taps when you don’t have something directly under the faucet to using low-flow cisterns.

  1. Heating

With Christmas around the corner heating bills are on everyone’s mind. There’s no two ways about it – heating is expensive. Nobody wants to work in the cold, but if everyone blasts their radiators the office gets stuffy and someone opens a window, which is entirely wasteful. A little vigilance goes a long way when it comes to keeping your bills and environmental impact to an absolute minimum.

  1. Recycling

While recycling isn’t directly going to affect your bottom line as a business, when clients visit your office and see how responsible you are as a company you’re going to impress them. Besides, recycling is one of those things which require such a miniscule amount of effort and produces such a massive gain in terms of environmental protection that there’s very little reason not to recycle.

  1. Others

There are plenty of other ways you can help improve how green your business is without negatively impacting your bottom line. For example, cycle to work schemes have proven effective both in terms of reducing carbon emissions and attracting talent towards your company. When you have taken the time and effort to make your company as lean and green as possible, you’re bound to catch the eye of the best talent around. This in turn will translate into more profits over the future as your company continues to grow.

Of course, there are times when these steps aren’t enough to keep your business in the black. If you’re going into the red instead of going green, make sure you seek independent financial advice as soon as possible.
