Going Green with iPhone Apps

As going green has become all the rage in mainstream America (and thankfully so) it is no surprise that iPhone apps have started to pop up that are geared to aid in the green movement. While not all of the green apps out there are as useful as one would hope, there are a few that stand out and may actually help to make a difference. Here are five of the newest iPhone apps that can help the modern, smart-phone-user to be more eco-friendly.

  • MeterRead: This app has a one-time fee of $2.99 and enables you to log your electricity use when you enter your electric meter’s readings. Not only could this help you to lower your monthly bill, but it could also aid in reducing your carbon footprint.
  • greenMeter: This app has a one-time fee of $5.99 and uses the accelerometer to determine the drag and resistance of your car and your driving habits in real-time. This way you can fine-tune your driving so as to have the smallest car related carbon footprint possible.
  • Shopgreen: This app is free. By answering a few simple questions about your lifestyle maintenance, shopgreen can tally any answers that are good for the environment and give you an eco-score based on the amount of CO2 you save. These CO2 savings can get you discounts at participating retail locations.
  • 3rdWhale: This is a free app that helps you to find nearby eco-friendly businesses to help you keep your lifestyle as green as possible.
  • Yowza!: This app is also free and is location aware. Yowza! brings up coupons for nearby retailers and enables you to use the digital coupon on your phone to reduce in paper waste from regular coupons.

While these iPhone apps may not be single-handedly capable of saving the planet, they certainly make good use of modern technology in an earth-friendly way. If you are an iPhone user, you might as well try one or all of them out and take that many more steps towards a green existence.
