Congratulations! You have saved up all year for your annual vacation and it’s almost time to start relaxing. While you are arranging your vacation plans, you should consider different ways to lower your trip expenses. If your expenses are lower you will have more pocket money to spend on food, entertainment or anything else you want to enjoy. Talk with your rental car company and try to negotiate a lower rate. Regardless of whether they agree to give you a lower price for renting one of their vehicles, you can always choose to drive a fuel-efficient car to save money. The Holden Barina has been around since 1985 and are manufactured by the Australian division of General Motors. The Honda Civic has been around since the 1970s and its latest car, the Honda Civic GX, has been voted the greenest vehicle of the year by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy eight years in a row. It was also named the 2012 Green Car of the Year by the Green Car Journal at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The car can be refueled at any place that has a natural gas source. It would need a 110 volt power source to charge and only uses 800 whats when it is being used. The Honda Civic GX can save you a lot of gas money while you are traveling to different destinations.

3. Chevy Aveo

The Chevy Aveo is another economical car that features two or four doors and automatic transmission. The car also comes with air-conditioning and a radio/CD player. Chevy Aveos are popular with many rental car companies since they are compact, so should be very easy for you to find one to use for your vacation.

4. Kia Rio

The Kia Rio gets 33 miles per gallon and does not emit any carbon dioxide chemicals. Although the vehicle appears small since it is a subcompact, it is highly functional and can fit up to four passengers. And there is more than enough room in the trunk for your pack luggage. The Kia Rio was originally manufactured in 2000 and is already in its third generation. All Rios have a diesel engine and front-wheel-drive. You can choose from a five door hatchback or a four-door sedan for your vacation. Due to its great gas mileage, this is a favorite for travelers that are watching their budget.

5. Chevy Cruze

The Chevy Cruze is relatively new vehicle since it was first manufactured in 2008 by General Motors. It is a four door compact sedan and also comes as a five door hatchback. The car is manufactured in South Korea, China, India, Vietnam, Thailand and Brazil. This is General Motors’ newest vehicle introduction since their recent bankruptcy. Its high strength steel frame and high gas efficiency makes it a great economical car to choose for long trips.

Renting a car while you are on vacation gives you more freedom to explore different places that you would not be able to if you used public transportation. It can also be easier since you won’t be restricted to different city schedules or time constraints. Find a car that is friendly to your wallet and also fits the amount of people that will be traveling with you. Call around and ask different rental companies what economy cars they have available. Visit them and inspect the cars in person so that you can see for yourself if you and your belongings would fit.
