5 Eco Friendly Hair Care Tips

Keeping your hair healthy the eco-friendly way can seem almost impossible. Store aisles are packed with chemical shampoos, conditioners, and styling products that can pollute both your hair and our environment. However, there are lots of great alternative ways to keep your hair looking its best without taking a toll on our ecosystems. Try some of these traditional hair care tips that are both eco-friendly and economical.

  1. Make Your Own Holding Gel
Commercial hair gels and holding products not only contain chemicals that can damage your hair, but their production also creates huge amounts of waste and pollution. If you need that extra hold for styling your hair, try mixing your own at home using natural ingredients like honey and tea tree oil. You’ll get the style you want without the negative effects, and you’ll be able to save money on hair care products at the same time.
  2. Highlight Naturally
Highlights are great for bringing out the vibrant tones in your hair color, but salon highlighting treatments are far from eco-friendly. Skip these harsh treatments by getting your highlights the natural way. Mix equal parts lemon juice, water, and white vinegar, and apply to your hair using a spray bottle. Spend some time out in the sun to let the mixture do its work and watch as your natural highlights emerge without those chemical-packed commercial hair dyes.
  3. Mix Up a Yogurt Mask
You want to keep your hair strong and healthy, and one of the best ways to do this is with a regular mask treatment. We all know about facial masks, but very few experience the benefits of a hair mask. Mix equal parts yogurt and honey, and massage this mixture into your dry hair, paying special attention to the roots and scalp. Rinse and wash normally after 30 minutes and enjoy the benefits of beautiful healthy hair. Treating your hair to an eco-friendly mask like this once a week yields great results.
  4. Use Olive Oil for Shine
Long before the days of shampoo, olive oil was commonly used for both hair and skin care, and you can carry on that tradition today. Work a generous amount of warm olive oil into your hair, enough for even coverage all over. You can use a shower cap to keep from making a mess while the oil soaks into your hair, or do this treatment in the bath for greater ease. After 30 minutes, rinse thoroughly and wash as usual. This treatment brings out the beautiful shine in your hair and is 100% natural.
  5. Tea Tree Oil to Reduce Frizz
One of the best ways you can keep your hair healthy the eco-friendly way is to start using tea tree oil. This oil has many possible uses, but perhaps the best application is reducing frizz and making curls more manageable. If you don’t want to buy Cortex flat iron products to straighten your hair or wear those curls naturally using tea tree oil to keep them looking and feeling their best.
