7 Tips for Eco-Friendly Living in Los Angeles

Los AngelesLiving in the LA area is a pleasant, laid-back lifestyle experience for anyone. If you enjoy the hustle and bustle of city living, you’ll love downtown, with its impressive architecture and interior design. If you prefer beach living, visit Santa Monica for sunshine and sand.

Wherever you decide to live in LA, you’ll quickly discover that residents of the West Coast are as eco-conscious as they are friendly. If you’re planning on moving to Los Angeles or San Francisco, here’s everything you need to know about eco-friendly living in the cultural capital of the United States.

  1. Avoid Single-Use Plastics

The ocean is a living being. Unfortunately, plastic waste is threatening the survival of this fragile eco-system. Californians are conscious about the effect of single-use plastic consumption, and you should be as well.

When you visit a grocery store, you’ll need to take a canvas shopping bag with you or rely on paper bags distributed by the store. The majority of restaurants don’t serve drinks with straws, and the chances of finding a plastic spoon are next to zero.

  1. Green Your Home

Tech design systems ensure that Californian homes come with eco-friendly appliances. Solar geysers, grey water recycling, and energy-efficient cooling systems are par for the course. If you’re considering buying a property in the greater LA area, such as the suburbs nestled in the valley, the majority will come with all of these “green” features.

  1. Beat the Traffic

Traffic in the Los Angeles area is terrifying. Commuters regularly spend more than 4-hours per day traveling to and from work. Avoid the crowds by arranging to work flexi-time and take the bus, tram, or train to the office instead of the car. If you have to use your vehicle, organize a carpool with other people in your office, or neighbors that work close to your place of employment.

  1. Plant a Tree

Trees soak up carbon dioxide to provide food for their foliage. Therefore, it’s common to see newly planted groves of trees throughout the greater Los Angeles area. Take part in this green initiative and plant a tree in a park or your yard.

  1. Keep Your Beach Clean

The Santa Monica area of Los Angeles is home to the famous Trestles beach. You’ll find numerous trash cans situated along the boardwalk. Locals take pride in their beach, and you’ll notice that they pick up any trash from the sand and dispose of it with the proper means. Give back to the ocean, join one of the many beach clean-ups provided by the Surfrider Foundation.

  1. Go Vegan

Farming beef produces a high volume of methane gas. Therefore, it’s common for many Californians to live a vegan lifestyle that avoids the use of animal products in their diet. There are hundreds of vegan restaurants offering tasty meat-free dishes scattered all over the city.

  1. Pick-Up After Your Dog

If you take your dog out for a walk, take a paper trash bag with you. Clean up after your dog and keep the streets sanitary. If you don’t adhere to this rule, you can expect nearby pedestrians to shame you.
