Sustainable Transportation: The Best of 2019

bike to work - sustainable transportationDriving a vehicle is a significant part of your life. It allows you to see your family and friends, and get to work. However, the conventional car causes more harm than you might think. Cars emit a wide range of gases and solid matter, which may contribute to global warming, acid rain and harmful effects on the environment and human health. This explains why the transportation sector generates the largest share of greenhouse gas emissions.

Due to all the damage gas-powered vehicles cause, it’s important to consider using different forms of sustainable transportation. You’ll not only be helping the world you live in, but it also benefits you. You’ll save a ton of money and it can also improve your health. Learn about the best sustainable forms of transportation of 2019 and how using them will benefit you and the environment.

Riding a Bicycle

Riding a bike to your destination benefits you and the environment in a variety of ways. Bicycles are a pollution-free mode of transportation, unlike cars, because they don’t need gas to run. All you have to do is pedal to wherever you want to go. Not having to pay for gas can save you over $1,400. Just think about all the things you can do with the money you’ll be saving. In addition, you won’t have to make monthly car payments, and buying a bike is a lot cheaper than buying a car. You’ll end up saving a whole lot more than just the cost of gas.

Riding a bike is also an excellent form of cardiovascular exercise. If you are looking to lose weight or build muscle, this is a great way to do so. Bike riding will also help provide you with a stronger heart and lungs, which can reduce the risk of heart disease and some types of cancers. Bicycle for ride to work is excellent for your health and is a great way to release some stress after a long day at work.

Carpooling

If you work 25 miles away from home, riding a bike to work is probably not feasible. It would take a very long time to get to work and it also requires a lot of stamina. However, an alternative to riding a bike is carpooling with your peers.

Carpooling might seem like a small step, but it does help the environment. If you’re carpooling with two other co-workers to get to work, that means that there are two fewer cars on the road. That leads to less carbon and other gasses getting into the air. In addition, if 100 people were to carpool every day for a year, 2,376,000 pounds of carbon dioxide can be removed from the air.

If you carpool with your peers, it also benefits you. Carpooling will make your car ride to your destination more entertaining. You are able to have conversations and laugh, which will make being in traffic a little better. Also, you will be saving money. You get to divide the costs of tolls you encounter on your drive and gasoline each time you need to fuel up.

Using Public Transportation

Public transportation is similar to carpooling. There are multiple people in a vehicle and it benefits you and the environment. One advantage to using public transportation, similar to riding a bike and carpooling, is the amount of money you’ll save. For example, if you decide to use the public bus every day, you will not have to pay for gas or any damages that happen to your car. All you have to do is pay a small fee to get on the bus.

Public transportation can also reduce greenhouse gas emissions. National averages show that subways and metros produce on average produce 76 percent lower greenhouse gas emissions per passenger mile than the average car.

Purchasing an Electric Car

Thanks to the advancement of technology, we now have cars that run solely on electricity. Electric cars are beneficial to the environment. They produce fewer emissions than conventional cars. And when electricity comes from renewable sources, electric cars won’t produce any emissions to run. In addition, electric vehicles are now trending towards more eco-friendly production. For example, the Ford Focus Electric is made up of recycled material, and the padding of the vehicle is made out of bio-based materials.

Electric vehicles are also cheaper to maintain. There’s a lot less parts than in a conventional car. With an electric car, you don’t have to worry about the oil, spark plugs or air filters because the car runs through a battery. You also don’t have to spend money on gas. You just charge your car at a charging station, which is often times free, or at home.

Purchasing a Hybrid Car

If you’re not interested in an electric vehicle, another great option is a hybrid. A hybrid car uses gas, but also relies on electricity. This means that the car has a gasoline engine and electric motor. Thanks to the engine and motor, hybrids reduce the amount of carbon emissions. It also helps your pocket, as you won’t be spending as much at the gas station.

Another way that hybrids help your pocket is if you ever wanted to sell it. They have a high resale value because they are equipped with higher standard of equipment than gas-only vehicles. It is also much harder to find a used hybrid than a used conventional vehicle, which brings its value up.

If you are unable to purchase a new vehicle at the moment, you can also have your car go through an emissions test. The test isn’t required by all states, but it is available. By testing your vehicle, you will learn if it is emitting excess pollutants into the air. If your car does fail, you will know that it needs to be repaired to meet emission standards.
