Easy Ways You Can Become More Environmentally Friendly in Day-to-Day Life

more environmentally friendly

It’s at the forefront of all sorts of news media at the moment: how you can become more environmentally friendly and reduce your carbon footprint in the world – and for good reason! There is only one planet earth, and because we live on it, it’s equally all of our responsibilities to nurture it and take care of it as much as possible, for ourselves, each other and future inhabitants of the earth. But how can we become more aware, and therefore be eco-friendlier in our day-to-day lives? Well it’s not rocket science, and it doesn’t require a huge and shocking lifestyle change. With these top tips, you’ll be reducing your carbon footprint in no time.

Be More Aware of Your Resources

Simply by being more aware of your resources and the way in which you use energy in your home, you can massively reduce your own carbon footprint – and save yourself some money on utility bills along the way. Pay attention to how much you use your heating, your water, and how often you travel in the car. Simply being aware is what can lead you to make more environmentally friendly choices, so educate yourself! With the internet being so readily accessible to us now, there’s really no excuse.

Practice Conservation

After practicing your awareness, be vigilant in conserving the energy that you actually use. This can be as simple as cutting your showers a little shorter, turning the tap off when you’re brushing your teeth, and making sure you unplug chargers and similar, and switch off your electrics at the wall when they’re not in use. It really is the smallest things that make the biggest difference, and again you can even save yourself some money in the long run! Or stop wasting too much time watching the television!

Plant a Tree

If you have the space for it, why not consider planting a tree in your garden? We literally need trees to survive. They produce fruit, clean the air, provide us with oxygen and provides a shelter for wildlife whilst also preventing oil erosion. Having a shady landscape around your home can help you reduce your energy consumption but also help to keep your home cool during a hot summer.

Not only this, but environment aside, trees are a fabulous feature to add to your home, and if you’re looking to sell up in the future, they can be a great selling point to buyers, not just for their health benefits but for the way they add to your garden too. Change Your Transport Habits

Driving is one of the biggest ways that you as an individual can make a real impact with environmentally friendly practices. Consider the way in which you travel, and whether or not this is necessary. For example, if you drive to work, either pick a more fuel-efficient route, or if you can opt for alternative transport. If you’re on a public transport route, can you therefore get the train or a bus, or if you’re close enough could you even consider getting fit and walking or cycling to work? These are all important elements to consider.

Reduce Your Own Use of Harmful Chemicals

Although we may not even realise it, a lot of us use harmful chemicals in our home on a fairly regular basis. Products like paint, oil and ammonia are to name but a few, and they release harmful pollution into the air when disposed openly, and this can even seep into soil and water. The polluted air and water can actually have a hugely negative effect on human health, so if you must use them, it should be disposed of appropriately.

Not only those more obvious ones, but did you know that the vast majority of shop bought cleaning products contain harmful chemicals in them? If you really knew what went into your cleaning products and the affect they can have, it’s uncertain whether you’d willingly go out and buy them. A lot of the chemicals found in these readily used household items have even been linked to the cause of respiratory problems found, particularly in children. There are a lot more friendly natural products we can use instead of these, that are better for not only our bodies, but the environment. Lemon and other citric fruits, bicarbonate of soda and vinegar make great cleaning alternative and are every bit as effective.
