5 Smart Ways To Dispose Of Your Gardening Waste

Gardening activities such as pruning, weeding and, trimming result in the accumulation of leaves, grass, flowers, leaves, and other parts of plants. The accumulation of all the plant matter resulting from gardening activities is known as gardening waste.

Apart from the natural shedding of leaves, fruits, flowers, or seeds, plants need constant care. This also results in gardening waste.  The accumulated garden waste needs to be disposed of in one way or the other. Cleaning garden waste is a continuous process that can be overwhelming.

Why You Should Dispose Of Your Gardening Waste

You may think that simply pushing the garden waste in a corner and letting it decompose is the way to go, right? After all, it will be absorbed back into the environment. Wrong. If not properly disposed of, garden waste may lead to contamination of the land and resources.  For example, if it comes into contact with water used for domestic consumption, the public’s overall health might be compromised.

Moreover, garden waste attracts pests and rodents and the gases emitted from the decaying plant matter can be toxic to the environment.

Garden waste will always be present in our gardens and yards. What needs to be addressed are ways to either utilize or get rid of it.

Below are some smart ways that you can use to dispose of your garden waste:

  1. Go Compost

Is the heap of garden waste in your backyard beginning to bother you? It may be unsightly – not to mention the unbearable stench that is coming from the pile. Your best solution may be composting.

Composting is the process where garden and food waste is recycled in compost pits or containers to produce naturally occurring microscopic organisms. Compost is also known as ‘black gold’ because of the benefits it introduces to the soil. Some of the benefits are:

  • The microbes help in supplying air to the soil while breaking down organic matter that is used by plants. These activities enrich and fertilize the soil. The microbes can also keep diseases at bay.
  •  Mixing compost with garden soil adds nutrients to the soil.
  • Compost manure is organic and a safer alternative to store-bought fertilizer.

It’s time to fold your sleeves, dig that compost pit, grab that bin or tumbler, and get down to work.

  1. Get A Skip Bin

Composting may not be your cup of tea, but you are stuck with a pile of garden waste that you have no idea how to tackle. Do not despair. Your answer may lie in getting a skip bin.

Skip bins are large containers that are open at the top and are fashioned to be loaded into a special kind of lorry. They may not be cheap but are one of the fastest and easiest ways to manage garden waste.

Skip bins are either provided by the local government or hired from skip hire companies. Essentially, when you sign up for a skip bin, you have also signed up for the waste to be collected. The waste is collected at regular intervals and disposed of at a landfill (garbage dump site). Skip bins are usually located at convenient places where depositing of waste can be easily done.

However, before you hire a skip bin, you should talk to garden waste removal experts such as Mobile Skips Brisbane and other providers near you. They can guide you on the right size to acquire depending on your needs.

  1. Mulch

Mulching is the placing of material on the surface of the soil to protect it from erosion and nourish plants.

If done properly, mulching will:

  • Help the soil retain its moisture because the evaporation level will be reduced.
  • Feed the soil when organic matter breaks down.
  • Lessen the growth of weeds in the garden because light will not reach the covered area.
  • Prevent soil erosion because the loose soil will be covered.
  • Protect plants from harsh weather conditions.
  • Regulate the soil’s temperature.

Just make sure you don’t go overboard with the mulch and end up suffocating the plants. Two to three layers of mulch are adequate.

  1. Drop The Waste Into A Landfill

You do not have to let gardening waste pile up just because you do not have enough space for compost or feel that hiring a skip bin is expensive. You can take matters into your own hands.

First, get the right equipment for the job. For example, you can get gloves, spades, brooms, and dustpans just to name a few. All you have to do is pack the waste in garbage bags and deposit the same at the landfill. Doing this regularly will enable you to manage gardening waste. The advantage of cleaning up and disposing of the waste in a landfill is that you do not have to wait for collection day. You will live in a clean and healthy environment. The only cost you’ll incur is the transport cost.

  1. Use An Incinerator To Burn Waste

An incinerator is an apparatus for burning waste material at high temperatures, reducing it to ash.

Spreading out garden waste to dry before burning it is better than piling the waste in a heap to decompose without taking any further action.  Before you burn the rubbish, however, make sure that you are compliant with the government rules.

You may use an incinerator to reduce unfavorable effects on the environment. This method may not be effective for handling large amounts of waste. However, if you are looking for a cheap and easy way to dispose of your garden waste, this may be the way to go.

A Solution To Environmental Degradation

A gardening waste disposal routine is all that is needed to manage waste. Letting waste pile up eventually ends up in a situation that is out of control.  Some people accumulate   so much waste that it becomes difficult to handle. For lack of waste disposal ideas, they resolve to deposit their waste on open fields. This becomes a disaster in waiting.

To control and curb improper disposal of garden waste, or any other waste for that matter, governments already imposed laws that outline proper waste disposal methods. Offenders who fail to observe the measures should be dealt with severely.

The responsibility of taking care of the environment should not be left to authorities.  Everyone who lives on this planet is charged with the responsibility of taking care of the environment. The effects of degradation of the environment are evident. Every means available must be used to prevent further degradation. We should all realize that we’re only stewards of this planet and have the responsibility to take care of it for the benefit of future generations.
