Eco Friendly Security Measures for Your Home

Although our busy highways and gas guzzling SUVs receive most of the animosity from environmentalists, the fact of the matter remains it is our homes, not our cars that are the biggest culprit when it comes to energy consumption. After all, those gas costs you complain about at the pumps are similarly elevated when it comes to your home’s gas stove and hot water heater. Add on top of that the 24-hour-a-day electric usage, the busy home offices, the laundry machines, dishwashers and long showers, and it is easy to see why powering our homes is the top energy concern moving towards the future. While people focus on these problems, it is easy to overlook home security. Global economic security and increased unrest has led many homeowners to consider ways of making their properties more secure. But as an environmentalist, it is up to you to find solutions that maintain a low carbon footprint. Here are a couple of eco-friendly security measures you could consider for your home.

One of the largest theft deterrents at your disposal is exterior lighting. But of course you don’t want to waste a ton of energy. In that case, you’ve got a couple of options. One great choice is to go with LED sensor lights that switch on with a movement detector. That way they will only light up when there is a need. Another option is a series of lights that work off of solar power. They’ll charge during the day and then run all night without a problem.

You want to make sure that your front door is a secure as possible, but it would be nice to do it without having to extract expensive, non-renewable resources from the earth. Contact your security or construction company and see if they offer composite front doors. These are made out of a range of recycled materials, but put together will be just as secure as new metal. Paired with the proper locking mechanism your home will be completely secure.

Insulated rolling shutters are a great option for your windows, for several reasons. They’ll keep your home warm during the cold months and cooler during the hot times when lowered, which will certainly help your monthly bills. But they’ll also create a real obstacle for criminals. Burglars will not be able to see through them, which means they won’t know if anyone is home, or whether a dark window offers safe entrance. And they’ll add a layer of physical protection to the windows themselves.

The same approach can work for your garage doors as well. Adding thick insulation to the garage will keep your home’s air conditioning or heating from disappearing outside. Whatever you spend on the materials will be offset by the monthly savings, and insulated doors made from recycled aluminum will stand up to significant attacks as well.

Finally, consider a home security measure that has nothing to do with technology and energy consumption, and that’s the family dog. People have been trusting dogs with their security for hundreds of years, and you don’t need some terrifying beast to make it work. Reach out to locksmith.net and see if they can provide you with one of those scary dog warning placards you can post outside. Train your dog to bark at exterior noises, and most burglars will choose an easier target.
